Nick Mayhew "Addressing Your Future”
Sunday 09.00- 13.30Times are tough in retail markets around the world but tough times bring opportunities to strong businesses. We want you to thrive rather than survive and Nick’s sessions will set you on the right path as well as setting the tone for the whole event.
Nick is a senior partner in accountancy firm Price Bailey where he heads up the Management Consultancy Division. He spends his working time advising small and medium size businesses on a wide range of subjects from writing the business plan to formulating the exit plan with everything in between.
Two years ago Nick addressed our Qualatex conference in Cambridge and quite literally set the event alight with his combination of inspirational speaking, thought provoking challenges and sound common sense.
Jacqui Saxon CBA of The Ultimate Balloon Co wrote to us after the event "It was refreshing to hear speakers talk about business and how to make money rather than skirting around the issue, looking around me it certainly opened lots of peoples’ eyes to the real word. Nick Mayhew was a wonderful speaker and I really enjoyed listening to him.”
This time we are going further with a working lunch where you will have the opportunity to work in small groups to solve problems and develop ideas relevant that are to your business.
Those who want to take things further after the Event can join our Balloon Business Academy an online tutorial and resource centre which is a virtual MBA geared to small businesses.
These sessions are a must for all business owners and are suitable for all those with a good command of English.

Luc has won numerous awards for his balloon decor work and is known for his innovative compositions and techniques. He feels teaching is as rewarding for himself as for the delegate, and is convinced that by sharing new techniques and passing on his knowledge, he is helping to build a solid foundation to ensure the future of the balloon industry.

Mark soon opened "Sky’s the Limit” a balloon decoration and retail shop and passed his Certified Balloon Artist assessment in 1998. In 2003 mark joined Pioneer Europe’s sales team and is now Sales and Development Manager managing the Qualatex Direct sales force and developing Pioneer’s education programme.
Mark has a unique experience gained from years of working directly with balloon business to grow their sales and profits from Qualatex balloons. "I have a passion for supporting balloon businesses. "My goal is to create a legacy of successful balloon business that have the skills and techniques to create beautiful Qualatex balloon designs and sell them profitably.”
"Sometimes it happens that curiosity becomes an interest, interest becomes a passion, passion becomes a job and job becomes a great opportunity to learn a new language, to meet talentedpeople and to make new friends”. So says Alberto Falcone, and for him it happened in 1995 at a balloon seminar in Florence. Following an enquiry to Pioneer about QBN & CBA, Alberto discovered that balloons could be a business, not just a hobby and soon after being awarded his CBA, he started teaching for Balloon Express Italy and had his first international opportunity at IBAC in 2003.
"I love working with balloons because through them it is possible to change the colour of the world and to know very happy people”. Alberto speaks Italian, French and fast-improving English. He has taught all over the world for Pioneer and projects his teaching method to delighted students no matter the language. "Every time I inflate a balloon I can put something special inside, like a sun ray, a butterfly tail, a fun thought..."
Fiona has gained a lot of experience over many years owning a party shop in Ireland and attending many balloon events around the world. She now owns and runs a balloon school, Balloons in Tuscany, in a very beautiful restored farmhouse close to the old walled city of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy.
Fiona has taken part in many competitions and has had a lot of success. The photographs from these competition pieces have led to a lot of lucrative work, with large scale decor in shopping centres and other larger venues. She also has a wealth of experience decorating weddings and designs for deliveries and shop collections.
Fiona is looking forward to passing on the knowledge, experience and passion she has gained over the years, so you will go home inspired and re-energised.
Vanessa's winning Ferris Wheel large sculpture and centerpiece at IBAC 2003 featured the detailing that she has become known for. Having graduated cum laude at Florence University in Italian Literature specializing in the History of Cinema, her passion for creating characters comes naturally. She began with balloons as a summer job helping her family's company, Balloon Express, both in the offices and on site, only later to become a "Dottoressa in Balloonology". As a Qualified Approved Instructor she's often busy training new Italian decorators for BACI, the Balloon Arts College Italia, and engagements with Pioneer have brought her to South America, Asia, the USA and throughout Europe. Her full service balloon and party shop in Florence is one of Italy's best!
Jose passed his CBA at the last Qualatex Event in 2005 in Amsterdam and he is now universally recognised as the Balloon Decorator in his home town of Mulhouse in France.
With a background in carpentry and a NVQ in Sales, after a shaky start in the franchise sector, Jose attended a workshop organised by the franchisee and very quickly learnt about Qualatex, how to work with premium balloons and all the benefits of the QBN programme.
Starting as everybody else learning to tie knots, Jose gained a lot of knowledge by attending all the different and varied Qualatex courses. Today his passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience make him a very successful decorator and retailer, having created Ballonrama.com website that promotes the sales of balloon bouquets throughout France and supports all decorators engaged in delivering professional services to their clients.
Nick Mayhew is partner and Board Director of Price Bailey LLP, Accountancy Age "Large Firm of the Year”.
Enza began her work with balloons in 1993 and in 1998 opened a Balloon Express Shop in Patti (on the northern Sicilian gulf where she lives) as part of the Balloon Express Shop franchise. In todays world Enza manages her shop and also works extensively with many affiliates. In particular she is a Balloon Express trainer for balloon arts and for party and balloon merchandising, working closely with new affiliates and also in Balloon Express trade shows and showrooms.
Enza has participated throughout the years in many balloon competitions both nationally and internationally, some individually and some as part of the well known Balloon Express Shop franchise team. Results at the World Balloon Convention 2010 were 1st place Delivery Competition, 1st place Column Competition and she was also part of the winning Italian team of 1st place Large Sculpture.
Attention to detail and trying to understand all aspects of balloon design and technique are what Colin feels have been most important to him. Colin feels passionately that the balloon industry is ready to take off in the near future which is the reason he competes and teaches. Colin says ‘ I am always trying to learn from other artists whilst also trying to develop new techniques myself ‘ he also states that he believes that only through top class instruction will the industry be able to grasp the opportunities that will be presented in the coming years.
Federico, CBA, has had extensive experience in the world of entertainment since 1990: organising and performing in shows using stilts and juggling feats. His first experience with Balloon Art and classic non-round sculptures came about in 1996. He was then introduced to a great new world of balloon sculptures after meeting Balloon Express in 1999. He has regularly attended "Balloon Art" courses in Florence since 1999, and he attended the IBAC in Chicago (USA) in March 2002 along with Alberto Falcone’s team.
He has won a vast array of awards including several national and international prizes: on ten differentoccasions winning first prize; coming second in six others championships and taking third prize in two others.
His most recent wins were taking 1st and 2nd place in the WBC 2010 in Dallas, Texas - 1stplace for Large Sculpture competition as Designer: St. George and the Dragon; and 2ndplace for "Figure” competition: Formica Rufa (Red Ant).
Shirley’s introduction to the balloon industry came through the world of Magic and Entertainment when, on discovering that twisting balloons added fun to her magic act, she caught the balloon bug and began designing her own animals and characters.
Now known for her creative twisted designs and eye-catching detail, Shirley has taught at many balloon conventions and Qualatex Events around the world.
Her work has been featured in both "Balloon Magic” and ”Balloon Images” and she is also the writer and author of numerous instructional books, articles and DVDs. Shirley, along with her husband Dave, runs her own home-based business in Leeds, West Yorkshire ”Balloons by Magic” which provides Décor ( with an addedTwist) Unique Balloon Gifts, Magic and Musical Entertainment.
Shirley has won many prestigious awards in the world of both Balloons and Magic and is a past president of the IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians). She is passionate about balloons, loves her work and believes you never stop learning.

I’ve been to lots of Qualatex training why do I need to go to this Event?
If you haven’t been to a major Event before we can understand why you would ask this question. Events have training at their core and in a three day period you will have the opportunity to gain inspiration from the very top instructors all in one venue. You will come away with design ideas that are worth the money on their own. Then there are the hands-on opportunities entering or helping with the competitions and the large-scale décor will give you confidence to tackle large scale jobs. The keynote speaker, Nick Mayhew, is awesome he will make you focus on your business and see things in a totally different light, this session alone will more than repay your investment. Taking time away from your business is also very beneficial; you will make new friends and contacts, rebuild your energy and enthusiasm and even get to go to the parties for a change! To hear what top instructors say about their event experience and how it got them started click here.
How do I choose which classes to attend?
We have colour coded the classes to help you decide and advise that you try to mix up your selection. If you are English speaking make sure you attend the Keynote Speaker address on Sunday morning.
Will there be a handbook of class notes?
No, we are trying to keep unnecessary paper to a minimum but you will get a complete set of instructions. These will be sent to you to download prior to the event.
I want to go but I am busy with Fireworks on Saturday 5th November
If you come later on the Saturday evening you will still be in time for the opening Disney Party and two full days of classes and events.
How do I get there?
On the Venue tab you will find instructions for getting there.
What sort of businesses will attend?
We expect a real mixture of decorators, people with retail shops, entertainers, event managers and distributors. Normally there would be about 30 nationalities represented with about 50% being from the UK.
Is this just for business owners?
No, although it is very important that owners attend. We have kept the costs low to encourage you to bring key staff and believe you will quickly recoup the costs from increased motivation, productivity and learned skills. There are 50 classes on offer and you cannot attend them all so bringing staff will allow you to see a variety of instructors and swap notes later.
I am new to the business; will the classes be over my head?
You will need to attend the all-day fundamentals class on Saturday where you will learn the basic techniques as these will not be covered in any of the other classes. Hands-on Décor sessions are a good way to re-enforce what you have learned and be sure to go to the business sessions. This year we have a new feature – a skills room where you can ask about and practice techniques that you have seen in class but are unsure of.
Will any of the classes be hands-on?
Yes the Fundamentals class and the décor building sessions are 100% hands on. Many of the entertainer classes will have elements of hands on and the skills room is a new feature where you can ask about and practice techniques that you have seen in class but are unsure of.
My English is not good, will there we anyone to help me?
Yes, some classes are taught in local language: French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian. In addition Event staff speak many languages and can be contacted through the Registration Desk. Depending on numbers we will also offer translation of some classes into French.
Can I take my CBA test at the Event?
Yes the test will be on Saturday 5 November from 09.30 and the good news is we do not charge any additional fee for taking your test at an Event. You will also get to attend the special CBA reception and receive your pin there.
Can I just attend for one day?
Yes, there are a few one-day passes available but we have to give priority to people who are attending the full event and staying at the hotel because we have committed to taking a certain number of bedrooms. If you want to book a day pass book early!
I want to spend additional nights at the hotel, how do I book these?
The Event price includes accommodation on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November. For additional nights please call Reservations on +44 1608 673333 and quote the Qualatex Event to take advantage of our special rate.
I would like to share a room; can you help me find a roommate?
Please visit our Facebook page where you can post your request.
My husband / wife / partner wants to come but will not attend classes how do I organise this?
If you go to the booking form and click on the arrow in the Full Package box you will find a range of options including a reduced price Guest Package. This will include two nights accommodation in a shared room and all the meals that are available on the full package. The resort has an 18 hole golf course and a Spa. We would advise advanced booking for Spa treatments, directly with the hotel.
Can I bring my children?
Sorry but our insurance stipulates that we cannot train anyone under the age of 18. If you are bringing a partner who is not taking classes and would like to also bring your children this is OK provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Children over 12 will be able to attend the Parties at the parents’ own risk. Please call and speak to Rachel Ings if you would like to add child places for any of the Parties as this is not an automatic option on the booking form - +44 (0)1279 501090.
